Description

Andover Primary School, built in 1859 by John Henderson from Edinburgh, is a Gothic-style building featuring a long, low, asymmetrical gabled design. It is constructed from rubble with chamfered openings. The school is a single-storey structure connected to a two-storey schoolhouse by a square entrance tower. This tower has a tall upper stage with pilasters, a clock at the lower level, and five arched belfry openings above. The tower is topped with a fish-scale pyramid roof, a bell cast, and lucarnes, which are truncated by an upper louvred belfry stage capped with a pyramid spirelet.

The south elevation of the school has six bays, with the second bay from the west projecting as a gabled bay that features a four-light window. The roof sweeps down over an arched porch, and there are pointed bipartite windows and transomed two-light lancets that rise into gablets. The east gable has a four-light window, all of which are latticed above the transom. The schoolhouse has a south gable front that aligns with the tower, featuring a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor. The west front is asymmetrical, with a projected central gable that includes an upper two-light window and a corbelled chimney on the right, while the left-hand bay has two-light windows, one of which has a gablet on the first floor. The roof is slated with broad eaves throughout. There are some later additions and modern temporary buildings at the rear that are not architecturally significant.
