Description

1859, John Henderson (Edinburgh). Gothic, long low

asymmetrical gabled composition, rubble-built with chamfered

openings. Single storey school and 2-storey school-house

linked by square entrance tower with tall pilastered upper

stage containing clock at lower level and 5 arched belfry

openings at the upper, fish-scale pyramid roof with bell

cast and lucarnes, truncated by upper louvred belfry stage

capped by pyramid spirelet. School south elevation 6-bay,

second from west projecting gabled bay with 4-light window

and roof swept down on west over arched porch, pointed

bipartites others transomed 2-light lancets rising into

gablets, E gable 4 light window, all latticed above the

transom. Schoolhouse has S gable front flush with tower

3-light window ground floor, 2-light at 1st. W front

asymmetrical with projected centre gable with upper 2 light

window corbelled chimney on right, 2-light windows in

left-hand bay, that at 1st with gablet. Slated roof with

broad eaves through out. Undistinguished later

additions and modern temporary buildings to rear.
