Description

Douglas House, located on King Street in Newton Stewart, was designed by architect John Henderson of Edinburgh in 1834. This classical and symmetrical school building incorporates an older gabled Free School building to the north. The 1834 structure has a rectangular plan, is single storey with a basement, and features a central tower. It consists of seven bays across three sections on a raised podium.

The main south elevation showcases a raised and projecting podium with steps at each end. The symmetrical seven-bay facade is divided by wide strip pilasters. The central doorway has a recessed panelled door topped with a fanlight and pilastered reveals. All windows are single light, aproned, and feature elaborate margined glazing.

The building has an eaves cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet with intermediate die piers, which are linked at the center by an arcaded balustrade. The roof is a combination of piended and platformed slate and lead.

The tower feature includes pilasters at the corners that rise to die piers, with an inscribed panel below the clock face on the south side, topped with a block pediment.

To the north is the former Free School, an early 19th-century structure that is two storeys with an attic and has single light sash and case windows with four-pane glazing. It is constructed of rubble with polished red sandstone margins and quoins. The ground level features two depressed-arch cart arches, which are now partly blocked with inserted windows.
