Description
Maison Dieu Church of Scotland, located on Witchden Road in Brechin, was designed by Sir George Washington Browne in 1891. This late classical neo-Georgian revival building features Greek details at its frontispiece and is situated on an elevated site. It has a rectangular six-bay plan and is two stories high, with a pedimented frontispiece at the center of the west gable. The front has a three-bay pilastrade of doors that lead to a distyle in coupled antis portico supported by fluted Ionic columns. The main entablature runs along the flanks, serving as lintels for the main windows, while small square windows are positioned above. The flanks are made of plain coursed rubble, featuring small lower windows and large upper windows that are also lintelled by the main entablature. The treatment is generally severe, except for the westmost bays, which have lower bipartite windows with their own entablature.
On the south flank, the eastmost bay features a tall square tower with a domed octagonal belfry stage, which has louvred round-arched openings set within Doric pilasters. The sides of the tower are blind and adorned with urns at the corners. A hall projects at right angles to the rear, featuring tripartite windows in the gables. The church is surrounded by a large churchyard that includes a dwarf boundary retaining wall. The main gatepiers are fluted on the inner face and panel-pilastered on the outer face, with panelled banded rustication. Short plain banded curved flank walls connect the outer piers, which are topped with ball finials. A footgate is located lower down, featuring banded piers with ball finials as well.
