Den Burn Works, Brechin

Den Burn Works in Brechin was begun in 1864 and extended in 1871. The building features coursers with margins and raised quoins at the corners. It has a four-storey, 18-bay front. The ground floor includes five round-headed doors set in architraves with key blocks, along with a central tall door that has been recently enlarged, topped with a band of lettering, a plaque, and a clock. The first-floor windows are arched, and there is a string course at the second level. An Italianate tower is located at the Southesk Street end, featuring tall round-headed openings in Doric angle pilasters at the top stage, along with a flagpole and a platformed roof with metal brattishing. The west elevation consists of four bays, including the tower. The building has a piended slated roof over a bracketed cornice. There is also a 13-bay single-storey range facing Southesk Street, which has north light valley roofs and rusticated base courses that diminish as the ground rises to the north, with architraved windows in each bay. At the rear, there are single-storey weaving sheds and an octagonal brick chimney.
