Clydesdale Bank, 91 Buchanan Street, Glasgow

The Clydesdale Bank, located at 91 Buchanan Street in Glasgow, is a commercial building designed by Sir George Washington Browne in 1896. This striking structure features a Flemish gable front and is adorned with Francois Ier detailing, constructed from banded red and white sandstone. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, showcasing an asymmetrical design.

On the left side, there is a cantilevered bay above the original entrance, which is elaborately decorated and topped with a scroll pediment. To the right, a large round-arched window on the ground floor has been converted into a door, and above it is a cantilevered balcony with a wrought-iron balustrade. The second floor features a five-light stone mullioned and transomed window, distinguished by alternate shaped and sculpted segmental heads. The second floor also has five lights with serpentine heads.

The shaped gable is embellished with scrolled details, obelisk finials, and an acroterion, with narrow lights arranged in a 2-1-2 pattern, complemented by applied pilasters and bas relief sculpture. The building is capped with corniced end stacks, contributing to its impressive architectural presence.
