Description
James Allan and Son is a five-storey commercial building located at 15, 17, 19, and 21 Gordon Street in Glasgow, designed by James Carruthers in 1931 in the Art Deco style. The building features five bays arranged in a 1-3-1 configuration and is faced with polished ashlar. Between the inner bays, there are metal panels, and the windows are metal casements. The ground floor has been altered but still shows traces of a marble shop fascia.
The building is distinguished by a giant order of pilasters that rise from the first to the fourth floor, dividing the bays. The windows are geometric metal designs with leaded margins. The metal panels between the floors include a shield panel and a Greek key frieze. There is a pseudo-eaves gallery and a bold cornice adorned with giant metopes. The parapet is raised and features sculpted panels over the outer bays.
Inside, there are Art Deco shop fittings at No. 19 Gordon Street, along with a bronze-faced lift.
