Description
16-18 Argyle Street in Glasgow is a five-storey, seven-bay by thirteen-bay Art Deco shop and warehouse designed by James Monro and Son between 1929 and 1931. It is located on a corner site, featuring a chamfered corner above the ground floor that creates a tower effect, complemented by rib-fluted and squat parapet details. The building has ashlar cladding on a steel frame, possibly made of Portland stone, while the rear elevation is constructed of red brick, channelled at the first floor with a rib-fluted band course above. The ground floor has a ribbed cornice and decorative cast-iron aprons at the centre bays on the third and fourth floors. The fenestration is regular, with modern shop fronts at the ground level.
On the Argyle Street elevation, the arrangement is 1-5-1 with narrow outer bays. Giant ribbed pilasters separate the five central bays from the second floor upwards, featuring a fluted course above a blank frieze, all enclosed within a large moulded architrave and topped with a blocking course.
The Virginia Street elevation consists of five bays to the left, detailed similarly to the Argyle Street elevation, and eight bays to the right, which include a four-storey section with a dormered attic and wider outer bays, finished with a plain eaves course. The building predominantly features plate glass glazing in metal casement windows and has a concrete flat roof.
