Description

R G Melvin and W Leiper, 1867. Late Italian Renaissance

palazzo style, 3-storey and basement commercial

building, 7-bay. Painted ashlar, channelled quoins,

moulded plinth; moulded cill course at 1st floor above

guilloched band course; decoratively bracketted main

cornice. Entrance in centre bay with heavily blocked

architrave and consoled canopy with acroteria. Moulded

architraves to round-arched ground floor windows in

flanking bays; Mannerist aedicules to 1st floor

supported on consoles. Moulded architraves to smaller

2nd floor windows. Plate-glass glazing pattern to sash

and case windows. Stugged, painted ashlar to N return

elevation.

Gateway to N by court, in painted ashlar wall, with

coping and classical pilaster to gatepier; wrought-iron

gates.
