Description

Burton's is a 1937, three-storey Art Deco department store located at 89-95 High Street in Kirkcaldy, situated on a corner site. The building features polished ashlar and red brick, complemented by marble and render. Its design includes giant pilasters with stylised Ionic capitals that define the bays of the curtain wall on the first and second floors. The structure has a base, deep fascia courses, and an entablature topped with a deep, stepped parapet.

On the south elevation facing High Street, the building has five bays above ground. The bay to the left of the centre contains paired, deep-set glazed doors, with two display windows to the right. The bays are separated by concrete piers. Above, there are four tall windows with an additional narrow window on the outer right, each separated by pilasters, and chevron-ornamented metal aprons between the floors.

The corner elevation to the southwest features three chamfered pillars with two display windows at the ground level, a rounded fascia, and a band course above. The upper floors have three windows with dividing pilasters and paired outer pilasters, topped by the tallest step of the blocking course.

The west elevation, facing Whytecauseway, has six bays above ground. To the right of centre, there are two display windows separated by piers. The left side features a shop entrance with a marble surround, a door flanked by display windows, and an additional window beyond to the left. There is a deep-set, two-leaf panelled timber door within a marble doorway, accompanied by commemorative plinth stones to the outer left, all beneath a marble fascia band. The bays above ground mirror those of the south elevation, with a narrow window on the outer left.

On the north elevation facing Hill Street, the fenestration is asymmetrical, with five boarded timber openings on the left at ground level. The large six-pane metal frame windows on the south, southwest, and west elevations have margin glazing, while similar windows on the north elevation do not have margins.

Inside, there is a stone stair with a timber handrail and dado.
