Description

The Nithsdale District Council Offices in Dumfries, designed by James Carruthers of Glasgow in 1931, showcase an Edwardian Baroque style. The building is constructed of red ashlar stone, featuring channeling at the basement level and architraved windows. It stands two storeys high with an attic storey at the wall head and a railed basement. The façade consists of seven pilastered bays, with a shallow advanced and wider central entrance bay that includes a granite staircase adorned with wrought-iron lamp brackets. The entrance features a round-headed doorway and an arched doorpiece supported by blocked columns. The ground floor windows are corniced, while the second-floor windows, particularly the central tripartite ones, are highlighted by wide key-blocks. The main entablature has a blocked cornice, and the attic storey is distinguished by a band course that steps over the windows. The building is topped with corniced stacks and a slate roof, and it has tall rear ranges.
