Description
The Coach House at 32 George Street in Dumfries is a broad-eaved Italianate structure built in the later 19th century. It is primarily constructed of polychrome-banded brick, featuring red ashlar cills and lintels. The northeast elevation facing the lane is finished with stugged and snecked red ashlar. The building has a main range that includes a loft and basement, with a lower range to the north creating an L-shaped plan.
There are three openings for coach-house or garage access on the lane, one of which is a circa 1980 alteration. Above these openings, there is a loft door and slit ventilators. The main range features a round-headed bipartite window in the southwest gable at ground level, with three loft lights above that have polychrome arches. A door, accessed by damaged cast-iron steps, and a window are located in the re-entrant angle, while a mullioned window faces southwest in the lower range. A stack is positioned over the westmost angle, and the roofs are slated.
