Description
39 Castle Street in Dumfries is a tall corner building designed in the style of Walter Newall, featuring classical details. It stands three storeys high with a railed basement and has three-bay elevations facing both Castle Street and George Street, all treated similarly. The exterior is finished in polished red ashlar with decorative architraves. Each elevation includes a central door topped with a bold consoled hood. The bay closest to the corner is slightly advanced and features bipartite windows, which are consoled except on the second floor, and has a parapet above. The ground and first floors are separated by string courses, and the openings are linked by shallow aprons. The building has sash windows; the bipartite windows are made of plate glass, while the single windows primarily feature a 12-pane glazing pattern. Additional architectural elements include an eaves course, a cornice, and distinctive stacks with ranks of square flues, all topped with a slate roof.
