Bethany Hall, Buccleuch Street, Dumfries

Bethany Hall, located on Buccleuch Street in Dumfries, was designed by A Crombie and built between 1862 and 1863. This Gothic church features a main gabled elevation facing the street and has a basic rectangular plan with narrow, shallow recessed bays that may enclose stairs. The west flank, which faces Greyfriars Street, has four bays. The building is constructed of red ashlar stone and includes stepped buttresses.

The main elevation is divided by buttresses into a nave and aisles, topped with a continuous roof. It features a cusped-headed recessed door set beneath a tall gabled head, and a large traceried window above it. A string course at cill level steps over the cusped-headed aisle lights. The gable ends have gabletted and saw-toothed skews, and the roof is covered with slate, including gabled ventilators. At the eastern end, there is an apse that may replace a traceried window, along with a low vestry and boiler house also located at the east.
