Description
The Methodist Church, located at 81 and 83 Buccleuch Street in Dumfries, was designed by T F Hunt of London in 1817, with James Thomson of Dumfries as the executing architect. Originally built as an Episcopal church, it features a striking giant tetrastyle Ionic portico facing Buccleuch Street. The building is constructed from painted ashlar and stands two storeys tall, with a rusticated ground floor.
The façade has single bays on either side of the portico and a three-bay elevation on Castle Street, which was altered in 1848 to include a full-height, five-sided pilastered apse at the center, adorned with tall round-headed windows. The gallery level features flanking round-headed bipartite windows with consoled cornices, which may also have been altered in 1848. The church has a cornice and a tall balustraded parapet over the openings, with a concealed roof topped by a small-paned circular lantern. Some decorative cast-iron railings from the original design still remain. Inside, the entablature is supported by cast-iron columns, and there is a ribbed dome beneath the lantern. The original seating and pulpit have since been removed.
