Description

Elim Pentecostal Church, located at 50 Marischal Street, was built in 1877 and features a three-bay gabled Gothic design. The church is characterized by pointed-arched openings and unique crocketed and saw-toothed decorations at the skews, which end in a bellcote. It is constructed from grey granite ashlar with recessed sandstone around the clerestory windows.

The east elevation includes recessed two-leaf timber doors in each ground floor bay, adorned with decorative cast-iron hinges and moulded surrounds, and pointed-arched fanlights above. The central doorway is slightly advanced and features a gabled doorpiece with a cross at the apex. Above this, there are cinquefoil stained-glass windows with sandstone dressings flanking a tripartite lancet window, also with sandstone dressings and a vesica at the center, all set within a pointed-arched opening. A small quatrefoil louvred opening is positioned above. The south elevation boasts three large pointed-arched windows with intricate tracery, while a segmental-arched pend runs beneath the building at Theatre Lane. The west elevation has two additional pointed-arched windows. On the north elevation, there is a single sash and case window above the pend at Theatre Lane. The roof is covered with grey slate, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.

Inside, the church features pointed-arch timber doors leading to the vestibule and main hall. The vestibule wall is fitted with fixed-pane leaded glazing. The large hall has a simple ribbed plasterwork coombed ceiling, and there is a gallery to the east decorated with quatrefoil and dentil motifs, supported by cast-iron columns. The vaulted basement consists of four long and shallow brick chambers.
