Description

The Clydesdale Bank, located at 33 Regent Quay in Aberdeen, is a significant Neo-Classical commercial building designed by Robert Gordon Wilson (Snr) in 1901. This imposing, long and narrow structure has three storeys and seven bays, effectively utilizing its constrained, sloping site with a single-bay entrance on the south elevation that overlooks the harbour. The exterior is finished in polished grey granite ashlar, featuring a base course and channeled rustication on the ground floor.

Notable architectural features include convex stone dressings surrounding a recessed round-arched door with a decorative fan-light on the south elevation, highlighted by a prominent pendentive key-stone. The central opening on the first floor boasts a consoled balcony and a broken segmental pediment above. Twin pilasters flank the second and third storeys, with moulded plinths resting on a band course. The heavily carved and dentiled pediment includes a tympanum with a central oculus and ornate scrolled stone-work, which returns to a balustraded parapet on the east elevation. The first-floor openings on the east elevation alternate between segmental and triangular pediments, separated by double-height pilasters. Ground floor arched windows complement a doorway with a segmental pediment in the outer left bay.

The ground floor features fixed-pane arched windows, while the upper floors are fitted with timber, double-hung sash and case windows. The building is topped with a leaded roof.

Inside, the main hall retains some original oak panelling and has a plaster cornice that is currently obscured by a false lighting ceiling. Arched stained glass windows on the west wall depict naval scenes, and the upper floors have been converted into flats.
