Description

71, 73, 75, 77, and 79 Buchanan Street in Glasgow is a commercial office building designed by James Thomson in 1880, with an attic added by Baird and Thomson in 1887. This four-storey building features an attic and modern shops at the ground floor. It showcases a free classical style with Greek detailing and is composed of seven bays arranged in a 2-3-2 pattern. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, and the windows are sash and case, set within architraves.

The first floor has shaped windows in lugged architraves, linked by a Greek-key frieze and topped with an anthemion. Above this is a dentil band and cornice. The second floor features a stylised anta pilastrade, while the third floor is adorned with arched windows that have an egg and dart archivolt, keyblocked in the central three bays. These are framed by Corinthian anta pilasters, with clasping in the outer bays of the central section, and a plain entablature with a dentil band and coupled modillion cornice.

The outer bays of the building have shaped, keyblocked dormers, while the central bays feature a tall tripartite dormer topped with an open pediment and the main cornice. The detailing of the main elevation continues into the first two bays of the north return to Mitchell Lane, which breaks forward and includes a dormer.
