Description

James Thomson, 1880, with attic Baird and Thomson,

  1. 4-storey and attic commercial office building with

modern shops at ground floor. Free classical with Greek

detailing. 7 bays, arranged 2-3-2. Polished ashlar. Sash

and case windows in architraves.

1st floor shaped windows in lugged architraves with

linking Greek-key frieze, surmounted by anthemion:

dentil band and cornice; 2nd floor stylised anta

pilastrade; 3rd floor arched windows with egg and dart

archivolt, keyblocked in central 3 bays, framed by

Corinthian anta pilasters, clasping in outer bays of

central section, plain entablature, dentil band, coupled

modillion cornice.

Shaped, keyblocked dormers in outer bays; central bays

tall tripartite dormer surmounted by open pediment, main

cornice.

Detailing of main elevation continues in 1st 2 bays of N

return to Mitchell Lane breaking forward with dormer.
