Description

James Thomson (Baird and Thomson), 1859-60. Upper 2 floors

and columns at doors later. 4 storeys half-sunk basement and

attic. 7 bays. Classical commercial building. Polished

ashlar, rusticated at ground floor with vermiculated quoins

and voussoirs, channelled at basement. Paired entries at head

of stone steps oversailing basement, portico with composite

columns and circular pierced parapet. All windows sash and

case in architraves, plate-glass. Ground floor console

keyblocked arched windows on basement bandcourse with aprons

and moulded cills; ground floor cornice. 1st floor windows

with slim outer pilasters, consoled. Corniced 2nd floor

moulded cill band between projecting cills; segmentally

pedimented windows. 3rd floor moulded cill band. Eaves rich

floral frieze, dentil band, modillion cornice. Attic storey

with recessed windows, tripartite in outer bays; lugged

architraves; central bays separated by panelled Doric

pilasters; parapet with panelled piers. Cast-iron railings.
