Description
140 West George Street is a classical commercial building designed by James Thomson (Baird and Thomson) between 1859 and 1860. It features four storeys, a half-sunk basement, and an attic, with a total of seven bays. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor that includes vermiculated quoins and voussoirs, and a channelled basement.
At the entrance, there are paired entries at the top of stone steps that oversail the basement, leading to a portico supported by composite columns and topped with a circular pierced parapet. All windows are sash and case, set within architraves and made of plate glass. The ground floor has console keyblocked arched windows on a bandcourse above the basement, complete with aprons and moulded cills, and features a cornice.
The first floor windows are flanked by slim outer pilasters and are consoled. The second floor has a corniced moulded cill band that runs between projecting cills, with segmentally pedimented windows. The third floor also has a moulded cill band. The eaves are adorned with a rich floral frieze, a dentil band, and a modillion cornice. The attic storey features recessed windows, with tripartite arrangements in the outer bays, lugged architraves, and central bays separated by panelled Doric pilasters, topped with a parapet that has panelled piers. The property is enclosed by cast-iron railings.
