Description

159-167 West George Street in Glasgow is a commercial building designed by James Thomson of Baird and Thomson, constructed between 1859 and 1860. The building features three to four stories and is organized into eight by twelve bays, with a symmetrical northern block of eight by seven bays and an additional five-bay, four-story southern block facing Hope Street. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar stone.

The second and third floors have a continuous moulded cill band, a dentil band, an eaves modillion cornice, and a solid parapet with panelled piers. All windows are sash and case, set within architraves and fitted with plate glass.

In the northern block, the ground floor has a polished granite plinth that rises into the door surround for the bank entrance, with a channelled ground floor and plain aprons. There is a two-light window in the eastern bay and a pilastered entry to the upper floors, while the remaining windows are single-light with an unusual three-pane horizontal glazing. The ground floor also features a modillion cornice. The first-floor windows are consoled and corniced, adorned with a sculpted paterae frieze and an independent mutule cornice. The second floor has a cill band, and the main entablature includes a pulvinated, panelled frieze with a dentil band and modillion cornice.

The southernmost bays facing Hope Street have floor levels arranged so that the third floor is the same height as the second floor in the main block, all linked by the main cornice. The ground floor contains modern shops, while the first-floor windows are consoled and corniced, and the second-floor windows are also corniced. The main entablature features a plain frieze.
