Description

The Bank of Scotland, located at 110-120 St Vincent Street in Glasgow, is a modern classical commercial building designed by James Miller between 1925 and 1927. This eight-storey structure, with a raised basement, features a facade divided into nine by six bays and is constructed of ashlar stone.

The building has a plinth that creates a stylobate for a giant order of engaged Greek Ionic fluted columns in antis facing St Vincent Street, with a pilastrade along Renfield Street. The design includes wide angle pilasters adorned with rosette necking. The basement is set back behind the colonnade, with a channelled masonry finish that extends one bay to the eastern return. The windows are plain and set in deep reveals, with a tall metal-glazed section lighting the banking hall at the raised ground floor, complemented by a metal frieze.

On the first floor, the windows are plain, and there is a bold entablature featuring a dentil band. The second floor has plain windows, with an elaborate Greek key frieze above that forms a cill band for the third floor. This supports a giant pilastrade that rises to the fifth floor, with metal panels between the floors. The sixth floor features plain bipartite windows, a rosette frieze, and a very elaborate main cornice. The northern return to West George Lane continues the detailing of the main elevation. The rear elevation showcases twin towers made of white glazed brick, with metal catwalks connecting the third to the sixth floors.

Inside, the banking hall is notable for its marble columns and a lowered ceiling.
