Public Library, Margaret Street, Inverness

The Public Library on Margaret Street in Inverness was designed by William Robertson and built between 1839 and 1841. It features a Greek Doric style and is constructed of ashlar stone with a channelled base. The building is a single storey and has a prominent central hexastyle portico with a pediment. It includes four-bay wings with coupled angle pilasters, and the windows are architraved and corniced, displaying marked entasis. At each end of the building, there are recessed entrance porches that also feature coupled angle pilasters and a full entablature, with architraved and pedimented doorpieces. There are some undistinguished additions at the rear of the library.
