Description

The East Chapel on Academy Street in Inverness was originally built in 1798 and underwent significant rebuilding in 1853, with large additions made by Ross and Macbeth in 1897-1898. The front facade from 1897-1898 features a Lombardic Gothic style, constructed from snecked, squared, and stugged rubble with polished ashlar dressings. The central part of the facade has a broad gable that includes a gableted pointed-arched entrance beneath wide traceried windows. To the left of the gable is a plain two-storey stair tower with a door below a pointed window and a gableted dormerhead. On the right side, there is a similar stair tower topped with a squat octagonal tower that has cusped belfry openings and a crenellated parapet adorned with pinnacled angle bartizans, culminating in a short slated octagonal spire. Pinnacled clasping buttresses are located at the angles of the main gable and the towers.
