Description
The Tolbooth on High Street in New Galloway was rebuilt in 1875, likely incorporating elements from an earlier 19th century building. It is a two-storey, six-bay structure featuring a three-stage tower at the northeast corner.
The walls are smooth rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, with polished raised margins and a basecourse. At the base of the tower, there is a round-arched hood-moulded doorway with a heraldic panel above it. All ground floor windows are four-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows are round-arched, with five-pane top sashes and four-pane lower sashes. The building has a bracketed gutter and slate roofs. The tower includes a square-headed window on the second stage and clock faces on the third stage. Pairs of brackets support the cornice, with finials at the angles. The steeply pitched French-style slate roof features timber louvered lucarnes.
A panel on the west wall states, "Rebuilt and enlarged 1875." There is also a two-bay wing extending to the East Port.
