Description
The Town Hall is believed to have originated in the 18th century but was largely rebuilt in the early 19th century, with a clock tower and upper storey added around 1912. It is a three-storey building with a two-window gabled front that features a clock tower. The structure is made of squared rubble laid to courses, with dressed quoins. It has a moderately pitched slate roof with plain close eaves, and a pyramid-shaped roof over a rectangular bellcote that has a splayed foot and twin louvres. The squat base of the building extends down to form an apron with a clock set within arches on the front gable.
The second-floor sash windows have stressed voussoirs and consist of six small panes over two long panes, with plain reveals and slate sills. An external rendered stone staircase with side walls leads to the first-floor entrance, which features a round arched doorway with a blind fanlight and a broad modern panelled door. There is a blocked door to the right on the ground floor.
On the side elevation, there are three 12-pane horned sash windows on the second floor and two similar windows on the first floor. A dummy window is present on the ground floor, along with doorways leading to a cross passage at the rear. The first and second floors are rendered on the west side, with rendering only on the second floor on the east side.
Inside, doorways lead to a vaulted passage with an open segmental arch at the rear. There is a vaulted chamber adjacent to the former town lock-up, which is also vaulted and features barred windows on the front and flank. This space was later converted for use as a cistern, with a drinking fountain that had a small brick arch (now removed). The rendered rear elevation is supported by twin buttresses.
