Description
Braelangwell is a building originally from the late 18th century that was significantly enlarged and redesigned, likely by William Robertson of Elgin, with work completed by James Ross between 1839 and 1845. It features a neo-classical style and is constructed of ashlar stone, standing two storeys tall.
The south entrance front has seven bays, with a pedimented center that is recessed between adjacent bays, which are treated as pylons. This section is framed by giant anta pilasters and includes a raised blocking course. There is an advanced distyle in antis Ionic portico that connects the three central bays, with giant angle pilasters at each end. The east side, which is the original front of the late 18th century house, has five bays and features a center tripartite doorpiece, now a window, that is pilastered and corniced, with a tripartite window above. The building also has an eaves band, cornice, and blocking course.
Inside, there is a notable late 18th century stairhall and high-quality plasterwork. There are also additions at the rear of the building.
