Description

Mains of Newhall is a rectangular courtyard steading built around 1830, constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings. It stands two storeys high, with the upper storey featuring no openings except for the grieve's house.

The south elevation has nine bays, with the ends and the centre slightly advanced. The centre section rises an additional storey and serves as a dovecote, which contains 550 stone nesting boxes arranged in two rows of flight holes in a triangular pattern. This section is topped with a slightly bellcast pyramidal roof that has a weathervane. The centre bay features a round-arched pend opening, while the end bays include a tall segmental-arched carriage opening on the right and a segmental-arched recess on the left.

The east elevation, which forms the approach to the mansion house, has eleven bays, with the end bays and the centre three bays (the grieve's house) slightly advanced. This elevation features tall round-arched recesses at the centre and end bays, with segmental-arched recesses at the bays flanking the centre.

There is a later large opening added to the north elevation, and a covered cattle court has been constructed inside the square. The roofs are piended and slated. To the south of the square, there is a detached single-storey and loft cart shed, built from rubble, with a granary above and a smith's shop at the rear. The west end of the cart shed has four segmental-arched openings, and it also has a slated roof.
