Description
The National Bank of Scotland in High Street, Dingwall, was designed by William Robertson from Elgin and built between 1835 and 1836. This austere classical building is two stories high and features a five-bay facade made of ashlar stone on the south side, with coursed rubble on the three-bay flanks. The central entrance is approached by a shallow flight of steps and is framed by a paired pilastered and corniced doorpiece. The building has giant angle pilasters that rise to a corniced blocking course, a shallow central pediment, and a moulded architraved window on the first floor with a block pediment that includes anthemion detailing. Some of the original 12-pane glazing remains. The building has a deep eaves band and a shallow projecting piended slate roof. There are modern shallow swept dormers on the east and west gables, and the original stacks have been removed. A small modern porch with a piended slate roof projects from the center of the west gable, and there is a large modern wing added to the rear.
