Description
The Locomotive Shed at Snibston Colliery is a small 19th-century building, constructed around 1831, that was designed to house and service locomotives used in the colliery. It was enlarged between 1913 and 1915.
The shed is built of red brick with blue brick detailing and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a linear plan, reflecting its two phases of construction.
The exterior consists of a narrow-bodied, single-storey structure with a stepped design. Access is provided at the east gable end through a single track. The earlier eastern phase has three bays, featuring a tall double doorway with 20th-century framed, ledged, and braced timber doors. On the south side wall, there are two window openings with semi-circular arched heads and 20th-century multi-pane frames. The north wall includes two windows with cast-iron frames and pointed-arched heads, while a third opening has been infilled. The roof structure has two vents: one square and one rectangular, gabled, and louvred. The later five-bay extension to the west is taller and has recessed panels on the side walls, with three openings on each side housing 20th-century multi-pane frames below shallow segmental-arched heads. There is also a single doorway on the south side wall. This section's roof includes two square vents and two gabled and louvred vents, similar to those on the original phase.
Inside, the engine shed features an open plan layout supported by king-post trusses and single side purlins. Paired bridging beams hold square cowls that connect to the roof vents. The earlier eastern section has a single hearth on the south side wall, and there is an inspection pit in the west section.
