Description
Christ Church is a church built between 1836 and 1838 by H J Stevens of Derby. A chancel was added in 1894-1895, and the church was restored from 1948 to 1952. It is constructed of ashlar stone with slate roofs. The church features a 4-bay aisleless nave, a chancel, and transeptal chapels. The west tower has four stages, with angle buttresses, battlements, and pinnacles, as well as a mast and weathercock. The tower is illuminated by plain lancets and a 2-light window with Y-tracery at the first floor level on the west side. The main body of the church is lit by cusped lancets with hood-moulds above, positioned between the buttresses. Inside, there is a brass memorial commemorating 35 miners who lost their lives in a fire at Whitwick Colliery on April 19, 1898.
