Description
The Church of St John the Baptist, built in 1878 and extended in 1887, is designed by J B Everard. It is constructed from Charnwood granite rubble with ashlar dressings and has Swithland slate roofs. The church features a 5-bay nave, aisles, transepts, a baptistery, a south transeptal chapel, a vestry, a tower one bay to the east of the crossing, and a chancel, all in a "French Gothic" style. The buttressed aisles have a string course and are lit by single lancets. The clerestorey contains twin cusped lancets, and the transepts feature plate tracery with a "Geometrical" 5-light east window. The tower has a pyramidal roof and a northeast stair turret with a conical roof, along with a bell-stage that is lit by three cusped lancets within an arcade and has an arcaded storey below. The west front includes a "Geometrical" oculus, two 2-light windows below it, and an arched doorway with three orders of mouldings and a gabled surround. Inside, the arcade is supported by polished granite columns, and there is a terracotta cornice. The church also has contemporary fittings, including gas-jets beneath the clerestorey.
