Description
The Vivian engine house is a two-storey gabled building that was originally topped with a slate roof. It is built from a combination of dressed sandstone, snecked rubble, and grey bricks made at the nearby copperworks. The oldest section of the structure is located in the south corner, where there is a significant amount of dressed stone. The building has been expanded to the north and raised in height using grey brick, with a raised band featuring red brick oculi and an eaves cornice.
On the west gable, there is a large doorway topped by an ornate carved stone tablet adorned with scrolls and flowers, which reads 'Commenced August 1860; completed February 1862; V & S'. The north side features a chamfered corner and four segmentally arched windows on the main floor, all with wooden frames. The east end has a tall opening that once accommodated the rope drive from the engine, along with an oculus positioned high in the gable. The south side displays openings that are irregularly placed across three levels.
Inside, the main floor is open to the metal roof trusses, and there is a service basement below. The upper floor includes a cill for a travelling crane.
