Description

The Canteen Building at the former Yorkshire Imperial Metalworks is a late 19th-century structure that originally served as a power house for the Morfa Copper Works. It features rubble walls with quoins and freestone dressings, topped by a wide slate roof that has a gambrel treatment at the eastern end and extends over the side aisles, incorporating long glazed roof-lights. The building retains the remains of a clock tower with a trapezoidal base, which was once louvered and featured clock faces and a weathervane. To the right, there are two stone chimney stacks with a cornice, and vents along the ridge.

The eastern gable end showcases a tall rounded-head window with glazing bars above a segmentally-headed doorway, which has been blocked. This central bay is flanked by segmental windows with glazing bars above wide modern windows, also blocked. The front walls of the side aisles are canted back, each featuring blocked segmental openings on the ground floor.

Inside, the building has a fine aisled interior consisting of four bays, supported by composite timber and iron trusses that follow a basic queen post construction. Circular cast-iron spandrels are present between the collar and the ironwork, while Gothic braces are supported by slender, reeded cast-iron columns with capitals. The structure also includes tension braces and ties made of wrought iron, along with compression members of cast iron.
