Description
Llangollen Hide & Skin Co. Ltd. is a building from two different periods. The right side dates back to around 1800 and features a three-storey, two-bay range, while the left side, added around 1880, consists of a two-storey and attic, three-bay range set into the corner. The building was converted into a tannery and has a roughcast front on the right and black and white applied half-timbering on the left, topped with slate roofs.
The right section has tall Gothick windows with a later 19th-century cambered red brick arch, now fitted with an iron lintel. It also features double doors and stone setts. The second floor has sliding sash windows, with a small pane sash below that has had its upper glazing bars removed, and all windows are framed with architraves. There is a boarded-up ground floor window next to a doorway that once had a pitched hood.
The left section is styled similarly to buildings in Chester, showcasing square panelling and close studding. It has three gables, with the left gable being broader and bracketed, complete with a finial, while the right gable jetties out with twin brackets. The first floor features oriel windows that are squared and bracketed on the left, and splayed on the right with panelled aprons. The casement windows have high transoms and diamond leaded glazing, and the ground floor is rusticated with modern windows. The left corner is splayed, and the original doorcase has been removed.
The left gable end is half-timbered and includes a cross range with a bracketed attic gable and an oriel window. Beyond this, modern warehouse ranges have replaced a former terrace, and there is a cobbled yard at the rear. The earlier right section has a cross range and a long small pane window at the back.
Inside, the building retains several high-quality Victorian timber chimneypieces. The main office features a chimneypiece with barley twist columns, heavy foliage carving, and English Delft tiling, while another office has a chimneypiece with sunburst carving and fluted details. The interior also includes fretwork dados and lincrusta wallpaper, as well as a Jacobean style staircase with pendants and finials, and a compact plan form at different levels.
