Description
51 Church Street is a 19th-century building that has undergone rewindowing and other alterations. The front features a symmetrical design with painted roughcast and rusticated quoins and plinth. It has an old slate roof with cement render chimney stacks on the right and boarded eaves. The windows are horned four-pane sashes, with those on the first floor extending through the eaves. There is a central blind panel and deep lugged lintels on the ground floor, with the centre containing an ornamental datestone. The door has Gothick small pane glazing at the top.
The building is two storeys with an attic, and the rendered rubble gable end includes small pane windows and a half-glazed stable door below. A three-storey cross range extends beyond, featuring similar glazing to the front and a chimney breast on the rear gable. The land slopes steeply to the rear, leading down to a former mill pond.
Inside, the hall has a stop-chamfered cross beam and carved initials on the fireplace lintel, similar to those found outside. A large cupboard may indicate the site of former fireplace stairs, while there is a larger fireplace at the left end. The main bedroom is open to the roof, showcasing a rubble rear wall and paired purlins, with a half-timbered wall backing onto the staircase. The doors are boarded, and there are brick stairs leading to the cellar.
