Description
The South Mill Building at Haselbury Mill is a mill building, possibly formerly steam powered, dating from the later 19th century. It features a facade of ham stone ashlar, with the rest of the structure built from coursed rubble. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has overhanging gables, while a brick chimney stack is located at the north end.
The west elevation has three storeys plus an attic and consists of three bays. It includes a plinth and 2-light chamfer-mullioned windows without labels, which have horizontal bar inserts. On the ground floor, there is a boarded door set in a chamfered cambered-arched doorway. The south side has a single-storey, 2-bay wagon shed with a slate roof.
On the north gable, there are single segmental pointed arched windows located towards the west corner on the first and second floors. The centre features doorways at the first, second, and attic floor levels, with the attic doorway having a sack hoist above it, protected by a short continuation of the main roof and a timber-framed cage on brackets. The east side has brick segmental-arched openings on the ground floor, which are now partly blocked, and a 2-light window on the first and second floors. The first-floor window has a 18th-century beaded surround with a plain architrave, suggesting it may have been reused from another building or indicates that this structure has older origins.
The interior is timber framed, but only the ground floor is accessible. This building is part of a long-established mill site; the will house that once stood to the south was destroyed by fire and replaced around 1880, but the present house is not included in this listing.
