Description

Haselbury Old Bridge is a road bridge over the River Parrett, likely dating from the 14th century. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar and features two segmental arches with two chamfered orders, divided by angled cutwaters on each side. The bridge has a simple plain parapet, with the south-west corner splayed to accommodate a road junction. Both sides of the bridge step up in the center to follow the slope of the hill, culminating in a plain top. By 1675, this bridge was part of the established route between Salisbury and Exeter and marked the boundary between the Chard (later Crewkerne) and Yeovil Trusts, both established in 1753. It also delineates the boundary between Haselbury Plucknett Civil Parish and Merriott Civil Parish. The bridge was repaired in 1844 at a cost of forty pounds, shortly after it had been bypassed by the main road from Crewkerne to Yeovil, which is located about 150 meters to the south.
