Description
Lower Severalls Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with modifications made in the 19th century. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone, featuring ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof with a coped gable on the east side and a plain gable on the west. The building has two storeys with an attic and displays irregular fenestration across six bays. The windows are hollow-chamfer mullioned without labels; bays 2, 3, and 4, 5, and 6 have a string mould between the floors. The first-floor windows are mostly rectangular leaded, with bay 3 featuring a 1 + 1 + 1 oriel light and a stepped stone roof. The ground floor includes 4-light windows in bays 2 and 5, single-light windows in bays 3 and 6, and a 3-light window in bay 4. There are French doors in bay 1, and bays 3 and 4 have a chamfered cambered-arched doorway without a label. Bay 1 shows signs of rebuilding, possibly indicating an addition. An attic window with 2 lights is located in the east gable, and there is a small lean-to below that reportedly conceals signs of a former external bread oven. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a cross-passage plan with stud and plank partitions, a plain hall fireplace with an adjoining spiral stair, and some chamfered beams with stops that transition between step-and-runout and scroll. There are indications of a bacon curing chamber, and the roof features earlier collar-beam trusses.
