Description
Underhill Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 17th century, with later modifications. It is constructed of ham stone rubble with a thatched roof featuring half-hips, and has brick chimney stacks. The cottage is single-storey with an attic, and arranged in a six-bay ‘L’ plan. It has small-pane casement windows of varying dates, set beneath timber lintols. Most windows are of two lights, with one in the upper bay of the second bay, a three-light window in the lower bay of the second bay, and windows between the upper bays three/four and five/six. A 20th-century boarded door is set within a heavy frame between bays two and three, sheltered by a thatched hood on timber posts. Bays three and five appear to have previously contained doorways, now blocked. A rendered buttress is located on the north-east corner. A 20th-century lean-to extension, set back and rendered with some timber boarding, is attached to the west gable, with a smaller lean-to to the west of this. The interior, which was not inspected, is reported to contain a timber spiral staircase alongside the main room’s fireplace, located above the entrance door. There are also traces of a bread oven in the walling, alongside a chamfered crossbeam with a rounded step and run-off stop, collar beam trusses, one of which has been closed off with a partition.
