Description
Nos 1, 2, and 3 Gentlemans Row are a row of three cottages built in the late 18th century. They are constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings and feature plain clay tiled roofs that have a steep pitch, set between coped gables, with the end gables stepped. The cottages have brick chimney stacks and are two storeys high, with each house having three bays that are similar and symmetrically arranged.
The buildings have a plinth, rusticated quoins, and rusticated pilasters between each house. The windows are beaded mullioned with shallow architraves, featuring rectangular leaded lights and iron-framed opening casements. The outer bays of each house have three-light windows, while the upper centre bay has a two-light window. The lower windows of No 2 have been removed and replaced with 20th-century reconstructed stone mullioned windows with labels inserted. Each unit has a central doorway with architraves that include triple keystones, and all doors are six-panel with top-lights.
Access to No 1 is via a flight of nine stone steps with a wrought-iron handrail, while No 2 has four stone steps with a wrought-iron handrail. The interiors have not been seen. Attached to the west gable is No 4 (Gentlemans Cottage), which is of a later date and not of special interest.
