Description
Oak House Private Hotel is a detached house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in subsequent centuries. It is constructed of ham stone rubble with ashlar and brick dressings. The roofs are thatched, with stepped coped gables and brick-and-stone chimney stacks. The building has a complex plan, with two storeys and three bays, the second bay slightly projecting and topped with a hipped roof. The first floor windows are horizontal bar casements of 3, 4, and 3 lights, set under timber lintols. The ground floor windows are 4-light casements in brick segmental arched openings in bays 1 and 2, and similar openings to the right of bay 1 and left of bay 3, which previously served as doorways, now containing casement windows. Bay 3 features a single-storey angled bay window, originally for a shop. A bracket for a hanging sign is located on the north-east corner. The south gable is plain, while the north gable has a recessed doorway with a conical thatched hood supported on timber brackets.
Attached to the rear are further units, including a main wing, of which the projecting second bay is a part, and a west crosswing. The interior reportedly contains timber-framed cross walls, a 12-panel moulded beam ceiling, traces of wattle and daub partitioning, an 18th-century well staircase, a large cambered-arched fireplace with ogee and ovolo mouldings, and a former kitchen fireplace that has been partly adapted. Other features include some doorways dating to the 16th century, various roof trusses—including at least one raised and possibly jointed cruck, post and truss partitions, and pair windbraces. The house was used as a department store in the early 19th century, and may have previously been an inn.
