Description

The North Mill Building at Haselbury Mill is a mill building that was formerly water-powered, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared ham stone, with ashlar dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof over stone slate base courses. The building has stepped coped gables with gabletted finials.

The west elevation has two storeys with an attic and consists of four bays. It includes plain mullioned windows, which are slightly chamfered with no labels; all windows are three-light, and some retain rectangular leaded lights. A broken waterwheel, which was over 2 meters in diameter and presumably overshot, once stood on the south side, with only the wing wall of its enclosure remaining. Higher up on the south wall, there are two three-light windows with beaded surrounds.

On the north side, there is a door at first floor level, and a timber-encased sack hoist projects from the attic level on brackets. The east side features a substantial lean-to built around 1900, which includes an indoor loading platform; one bay of this lean-to has been adapted for use as a garage.

Inside the main building, the floor beams are supported by slim cast iron centre-prop columns on both floors, and the open tread stairs are likely original. The roof features queen-post trusses. Some machinery and gears of various dates are still present, and the mill was still occasionally used as of October 1985, utilizing electric-powered machinery. The building is part of a long-established mill site; the mill house that once stood to the south was destroyed by fire and replaced around 1880, but the current house is not included in the listing.
