Description
This is a Second World War pillbox, likely built in the autumn of 1940, located 11 meters south-west of Easthams Hill Farm.
Constructed from red brick with concrete dressings, the pillbox features an irregular hexagonal plan. It is positioned on raised ground, partially set into the bank on the north side of the A30. The thick brick walls rise from a double-chamfered brick plinth and are topped with a reinforced concrete ring beam. There is no roof, nor is there any indication that a roof was ever present.
The pillbox has four embrasures, with three facing roughly north, north-east, and east, and the fourth facing south. Each embrasure has concrete cills and retains steel armour plate within the splays. Access is provided through a rear (north) entrance trench, which includes four concrete steps leading into the interior.
Inside, there is no central anti-ricochet wall, which is typical of most pillboxes. The concrete floor slab features a hole at its center, possibly serving as a drain. Below each of the large embrasures, there is a step or weapon rest.
