Description

Cwmisaf Mill is a former woollen mill, built on a domestic scale, likely in the 18th century. The building is constructed of stone with a slate roof, featuring gables with overhanging eaves and a west gable stack. The north-facing main elevation consists of four bays, with the ground level slightly sunken. A door is situated in the right-centre bay. Windows have yellow and red-brown brick heads, four-pane horned sashes, and projecting slate sills. Boarded doors are fitted with a two-pane overlight. The west gable has external stone steps leading to a door on the right side and a window to the left. An overshot waterwheel is located at the east end, measuring 12 feet in diameter and 3 feet 8 inches wide, with the shrouds marked ‘D. DAVIES PENRALLT.’ A gable window is also present. The south elevation’s central section has been rebuilt; three bays were originally four. The outer bays retain their original window openings, while a wide central opening was later added to the ground floor and a rebuilt window opening above. Windows are currently missing.

The mill is largely empty, but the ground floor retains a short section of line shafting, some belt pulleys, and fixtures attached to the joists. A fireplace is in the west gable, featuring a cast iron basket and a tile floor. Graffiti is visible on the joists. The first floor has a six-bay A-frame roof with light purlins and common rafters, creating an open-plan space. There is evidence of heightening to the east gable, as well as a hatch in the floor.
