Description
The Church of Saint Dogmael is an Anglican parish church, dating from the 16th century and later, constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs. The church comprises two parallel naves of roughly equal size, with the northern nave slightly longer to the west and featuring a bellcote.
The north nave has renewed windows in grey stone, featuring flat heads and slightly pointed lights in a 16th-century style. The west end has a long two-light window with stone voussoirs. The south side has a narrow, medieval segmental-pointed door with a late 19th-century studded door and wrought iron hinges, a central three-light window with a rough relieving arch, and a smaller two-light window set higher with a hoodmould. The east end has a three-light window with a hood, set higher again, and prominent northeast corner stones. A west bellcote, constructed of cut grey stone, has a chamfered segmental-pointed bell-opening and a stone-coped gable.
The south nave projects forward at the west end with a medieval chamfered segmental-pointed doorway and a three-light window with a hoodmould, reminiscent of the north nave windows. Attached slate, pedimented memorials flank the doorway, commemorating Mary Owens of Bwlchstop (died 1835) and Thomas Griffiths of Blaencleddau (died 1833), both signed D. Ll. Nevern. The south side features three late 19th-century ashlar two-light windows with ogee cusped heads to the lights, and a similar three-light window to the east end, with the central light taller. Rough foundations are exposed at the east end of the south wall, and there is no clear joint between the two east walls, possibly obscured by a downpipe.
The interior has whitewashed, plastered walls and a three-bay plastered arcade with broad, chamfered arches resting on chamfered piers, lacking imposts or bases. The north aisle features an attractive 19th-century pine, four-bay roof with heavy collar trusses, chamfered below the collars, with king-struts above and wind-braces to the mid-purlins. Painted ashlar segmental-pointed window heads are found, along with a cambered head to the north door. A small, rectangular recess is set low on the extreme left of the east wall, and a roughly-stone chamfered shelf projects at the extreme right of the same wall, with an adjoining block at the east end of the arcade wall. The west end contains a late 19th-century, enclosed, panelled timber vestry with small two-light piercings to each upper panel, and a broad board door with an elliptical-arched head, flanked by four panels on each side.
The south aisle, containing the altar, has five plain, bolted collar-trusses supporting the roof. Painted ashlar segmental-pointed window reveals are visible, with the sill of the east window significantly below the window head. 19th-century moulded stone corbels or shelves are positioned on either side, and the south window reveal extends to form a seat. Two steps lead to the sanctuary, which has a tile floor with some encaustic tiles. A flat head adorns the west doorway.
Fittings include a stone, medieval, square font with slightly tapered sides, chamfered angles, and a lower chamfered edge. A late 19th-century, heavy grey stone, square pier, chamfered at angles, sits upon a chamfered octagonal base. Panelled pine pews with shaped bench ends are present. A plain pine, panelled pulpit with a canted front stands alongside a plain pine, panelled lectern with a bookrest. Simple sanctuary rails are positioned on posts, to the west and north sides of the sanctuary.
Memorials include a bronze plaque on the north wall dedicated to Private B. Jones (died 1900), a standard City of London Imperial Volunteers memorial by F. Wheeler.
