Description

This building at 36 High Street is a pair of houses with shops, dating from the 19th century. It features a stucco exterior with slate roofs and a prominent red brick cross-axial stack. The structure is three storeys tall with an attic, displaying a two-window range on each street side and a recessed curved one-window angle on the northwest corner. The flat bracketed eaves and broad pediments enhance each facade, which is adorned with paired 4-pane sash windows. The second floor has 9-pane sashes, while the first floor features 12-pane sashes, all with slate sills and moulded stucco hoods. The windows on the curved corner are also curved. A band runs between the floors.

On the ground floor, there are two shop windows on each facade, made of plate glass with rusticated jambs, and a band above them. The entrance to No 36 on High Street is to the right and includes an overlight. The corner features recessed double doors with an overlight. The Saint Mary's Street front boasts a fine 6-panel door to the left, complete with a large traceried overlight and a corniced doorcase supported by fluted pilasters and panelled reveals. There is also an additional 12-pane sash window on the first floor above the door.

It is noted that the glazing bar sashes on the first and second floors of No 36 have been replaced with aluminium, while the remaining windows are unaltered.
