Description
37 High Street is a house that was altered in the late 19th century to function as a shop. It features a stucco exterior with a slate roof and brick end stacks. The building stands three storeys tall with an attic and has a three-window range, although it likely originally had five windows to match the upper floor. The eaves are adorned with a modillion cornice.
There are two hipped dormers on the roof, each containing 6-pane hornless sash windows. The second floor has five 6-pane hornless sashes, each framed by rusticated stucco surrounds and a sill band. On the first floor, the central window is a plate glass sash set in a rusticated stucco surround, flanked by canted oriel windows that also feature plate glass sashes, moulded cornices, and metal-clad hipped roofs.
The ground floor includes a house door on the left, which is a six-panel door with an overlight. This door appears to have been a window previously, as rusticated jambs and a sill course remain visible on the left side. The rest of the ground floor showcases a fine late 19th-century plate glass shopfront, complete with panelled piers, brackets, and a well-lettered fascia. The shop windows are accented by slim column shafts positioned at angles to the centre deep-set door.
