Description

1 and 2 Green Street are a pair of cottages dating from the 18th century, constructed from rubble stone and finished with coloured limewash, which is a restoration of the historical finish. They have slate roofs with rebuilt stone gable end stacks and are one and a half storeys high. Each cottage has a two-unit plan with an off-centre entrance. The panelled doors reflect a traditional Cardigan style, and the flanking windows, which have been restored in their original openings, feature timber lintels and renewed slate sills, with 12-pane sash windows. The upper windows are cat-slide dormers with 6-pane sashes, aligned with the lower windows, although number 1 has an additional window to the right of its doorway. At the rear, there are added outshuts of slightly differing heights, with doors flanked by small-paned casement windows and a reconstructed brick stack between the two units.

Attached to the rear of number 2 is a former stable, built as a lean-to against the boundary wall of the castle. This stable is also made of rubble with a slate roof, featuring a central doorway and flanking windows. Beyond the stable, the rear boundary is marked by a high rubble stone wall.

While the original layouts have been modified, they are still discernible. Each cottage once had a two-unit plan with a central through passage, although the internal partitions have been lost. The two cottages are now linked at each floor by doors cut through the original dividing wall. Much of the original internal structure remains, including cross-beams that appear to be re-used, supporting the upper floor (which has been partially removed in number 2), and the roof trusses, which consist of rough principal rafters with high-set collars. In number 2, a Simnai fawr survives, featuring a small cast-iron range and a brick domed bread oven. The rear outshut of this cottage also retains a corner fireplace with a small cast-iron range.
