Description

Manchester House is a 19th-century warehouse featuring stucco exterior, hipped slate roofs, and red brick end stacks. The building has a rough square plan with a canted northwest angle and stands three stories tall, presenting four-window fronts to both Bridge Street and Quay Street.

The Bridge Street facade includes a left bay of double width, which accommodates a two-storey canted bay window with a tripartite sash above. This section is accentuated by upper giant pilasters, a cornice, and a deep plain frieze beneath the eaves. The windows are fitted with plate glass sashes set on painted slate sills, and there is a moulded band between the floors, except in the left bay where the bay window features a plain hipped roof. The canted northwest angle has a similar one-window arrangement.

On the ground floor, the left angle pier displays channelled rustication, flanking the adjoining bay window. The central entrance door is positioned between pilasters, with a shopfront to the right that includes a matching pilaster and a similar pilaster framing the shop window in the canted angle. An overall entablature with a moulded cornice extends around the bay window. The central panelled door has an overlight above it, while the shopfront showcases plate glass windows with a deeply recessed centre door, also featuring an overlight. The Quay Street front is simpler, displaying a four-window arrangement.

Inside, the shop features a T-plan pitch-pine staircase, which has a single flight leading to a double flight return, supported by turned balusters.
