Description
Castle Green House is a stucco-fronted villa dating from the 18th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with the prominent east elevation banded in blue lias slate. It has a hipped slate roof and stone rear stacks.
The front range is a two-storey, three-window villa. The ground floor is channelled, and features arched windows and a broad central doorway, alongside a raised plinth, band, and first-floor sill course, all accentuated by 12-pane sash windows. Bracketed eaves are present, as are double six-panel doors with a wrought iron traceried fanlight. A large timber trellis porch with wrought iron rails is situated over the entrance. An arched ground floor window is set into the east end wall.
A long rear range extends far beyond the main house on the east side, culminating in a prominent three-storey banded stone section with a hipped roof. This section has sash windows with cut stone voussoirs and cambered heads; the upper floor features six-pane windows, the main floor 12-pane, and the ground floor semi-basement windows are half-size. The east end has a one-window range, while the south front presents a two-window range with a door to the left. To the north east angle of the main house, a pointed stair-light featuring intersecting glazing bars is visible. The rear of the rear range features a service court enclosed by high walls, leading to a two-storey, hipped-roofed cottage in matching style. This is followed by a three-window range (three-storey), a slightly recessed bay, a projecting round tower, and two further bays (all two-storey) all to the same ridge height. The round tower incorporates what appears to be medieval masonry to the first floor mid-window level, with prominent angle spur buttresses. A door provides access to the basement, above which is a large first-floor 12-pane sash window under a rounded slate roof. Two smaller windows are on the west side and a single window on the east. The west end wall of the range projects beyond the front range and contains one large window below and a six-pane window above. The rear cottage has a central ridge stack and a two-window north front with six-pane and 12-pane windows respectively. The east end of the cottage mirrors the height of the service range and has a single window.
The interior was derelict in 1991, but included a hall with a plaster cross vault and cornices, further plaster cornices to the main south east and south west rooms, and marble fireplaces. A stair with stick balusters features an apse-ended design. A vaulted ceiling is said to exist in the tower basement.
