Description

The Old Custom House is a single-storey building constructed from coursed blue lias stone and topped with a slate roof. The facade features three bays, originally designed with tall recessed arched openings, each adorned with cut stone voussoirs. However, the right bay has been altered with a large 19th-century shopfront that replaced the original opening.

The left arch contains fixed 20th-century small-paned glazing and a rendered top lunette, while the center arch features double doors with an overlight and a rendered lunette. The doors are six-panel with top glazing.

The shopfront on the right is flanked by pilasters, each topped with triglyphs in the fascia and a cornice above. It includes large double panelled doors set back to the left, with an overlight that has a flattened arched head and panelled reveals. The shop window consists of three large plate glass lights, with top lights situated above a thin transom.

At the southeast, there is a rear wing with a hipped roof, which has been clad in roughcast in the 20th century. The east end wall of the Custom House features a 20th-century plate glass window situated below a large late 19th-century tripartite sash window.
